Useful expertise needs a form

During the past six days, you selected one situation and recovered several layers beneath your performance:

• The result other people see.

• The hidden work that supports it.

• The decisions that change your direction.

• The clues that inform those decisions.

• The questions you use to interpret the clues.

• The exceptions that require you to adjust.

This material can become useful beyond the original event. The appropriate form depends on who needs it, when they need it, and what they must be able to do.

A list of everything you know may preserve information without helping another person perform. A useful expertise artifact organizes selected knowledge around a real decision, task, or problem.

Today, you will identify that possible use.

Today, you will identify when your usual approach should change and how you adapt it.

Expertise includes knowing the limits of a rule

Early explanations of a method often sound clean.

Follow these steps. Ask these questions. Look for these clues.

Real work introduces conditions that the standard explanation does not cover.

• A clue can have more than one meaning.

• A reliable sequence may become unsafe under time pressure.

• A method that works for an experienced client may overwhelm a beginner.

• A low-risk decision may require less evidence than a decision with serious legal, financial, or human consequences.

Experts learn where a rule stops being reliable. They recognize exceptions and adjust their response without discarding the entire method.

These boundary conditions are often missing when expertise is documented. The result may look complete while failing in the situations where judgment matters most.

Welcome to Day 5 !

Today, you will identify the questions you use to test assumptions, interpret clues, and decide what to do next.

Good questions carry expert knowledge

Expertise often appears in the quality and order of the questions a person asks.

Questions direct attention. They determine which evidence enters the conversation, which assumptions receive scrutiny, and which possibilities remain available.

With experience, some questions become internal. You may ask them silently, answer them from the available evidence, and move forward without noticing the sequence. Someone observing you sees the decision without hearing the inquiry that produced it.

Surfacing these questions begins to make your reasoning available to another person.

Welcome to Day 4 !

Today, you will identify the signals, details, and patterns that inform your decisions.

Experts do not make decisions without information

Yesterday, you identified several points where your judgment changed the direction of the work. Today, you will look at what informed that judgment.

A clue is something you observe and interpret. It might be a phrase, behavior, number, omission, inconsistency, sequence, change, or condition.

The clue matters because experience has taught you what it may indicate.

People with less experience can see the same information and assign a different meaning to it. They might overlook a detail, treat every signal as equally important, or act before recognizing a pattern.

When an expert says, “Something about this did not look right,” the feeling often rests on clues that have not yet been named.

Welcome to Day 3 !

Today, you will identify three decisions that shape how you handle the situation you selected.

Decisions reveal where judgment enters the work

A process can list the steps of a task without explaining how someone chooses the correct path.

Expertise becomes especially valuable at the points where more than one reasonable action is possible. You could continue, pause, investigate, escalate, simplify, reject, or change direction. Your choice affects what happens next.

These points are decision points.

Some decisions will be easy to remember because you considered them deliberately. Others may feel like part of the normal flow of work.

You might say, “I could tell we needed to slow down,” or “I knew that option would create another problem.”

These statements often signal a decision that has become automatic.

Welcome to Day 2 !

Today, you will identify what other people can see when you perform well and what remains hidden beneath that result.

The finished work hides the work that produced it

Expert performance often looks simpler from the outside than it feels from the inside.

• A client sees a clear recommendation.

• A participant experiences a useful workshop.

• A leader receives a concise plan.

• A customer sees a problem resolved quickly.

The finished result does not show everything that produced it. It conceals the comparisons, interpretations, warnings, tradeoffs, and rejected options that shaped the final response.

Repeated experience makes some of this work faster. You may no longer notice each part because several judgments now happen together. The result remains visible while the expertise beneath it becomes compressed.

Today, you will begin separating those two layers.

Welcome to Day 1 !

Today, you will choose one specific situation in which another person relies on your experience, judgment, or problem-solving ability.

You will use this situation as your excavation site for the rest of the course.

Expertise is easier to see in action

When someone asks what you are good at, you might answer with a broad field such as strategy, facilitation, innovation, leadership, design, operations, or consulting. These labels name a category of work. They do not show what you notice, decide, or do differently within that work.

Broad questions also make expertise harder to recall. Your knowledge did not develop as one organized explanation. It developed while you solved problems, made decisions, corrected mistakes, and adapted to changing conditions.

This means that the best place to begin is a specific situation.

Think about the work that people bring to you when they are uncertain. Consider the problem they ask you to examine, the decision they want you to help make, or the result they trust you to produce.

You do not need to excavate your entire career. One well-chosen site can reveal enough material to begin.

Are you be able to do work that other people find difficult and still struggle to explain what makes you good at it?

It’s not uncommon. After years of solving similar problems, your knowledge becomes compressed.

• You recognize patterns quickly.

• You ask questions automatically.

• You dismiss weak options without examining every reason.

• You adjust your approach when the usual method does not fit.

Other people see the result, but much of the thinking that produced it remains hidden.

This creates a problem when you want to turn your expertise into a product, service, workshop, framework, decision tool, playbook, or system. Another person cannot use what you have not yet learned to explain.

The Expertise Excavation Jumpstart will help you begin that work.

What you will do during the Jumpstart

Over seven lessons, you will select one recurring situation from your work and examine what happens beneath the visible result.

You will identify the decisions you make, the clues you notice, the questions you ask, and the exceptions that cause you to adjust your approach. By the end of the course, you will have an Expertise Excavation Record for one narrow area of your expertise.

Your record will contain:

• A specific situation in which people rely on you.

• Three important decisions you make.

• The clues that inform those decisions.

• The questions you use to interpret those clues.

• The exceptions that require a different response.

• One possible form your expertise could take so another person can use it.

The outcome is deliberately narrow. You will excavate one recurring situation rather than attempt to explain everything you have learned throughout your career. This constraint makes the work more concrete and gives you something useful to build upon.
